HAPPINESS ON HAMILTON ISLAND

We recently ventured up to the Whitsundays with friends of ours and all the kids in tow.

Leaving Sydney in the morning at a very decent hour to arrive at Hamilton Island ready for lunch. Only a 2 and a half hour flight from Sydney, this makes for a perfect destination for a family getaway. Arriving you can feel the tropical Island air, and one would feel as though they could be anywhere in the world.

One is spoilt for choice on the accommodation side of things. From the Reef View Hotel, Yacht Club Villas, apartments or holiday homes, Hamilton Island has something to suit everyone. On this particular holiday both families opted with 2bedroom apartments (which included a buggy for each family). Let me tell you the Buggy was a huge hit with all the kids.

As we arrived at Hamilton Island airport we were greeted by our porter whom had our 2 buggies ready to go. Once we loaded our bags we were off and running (or should I say chugging) up the steep hill and to our apartments. The apartments were just perfect, located on the ground level next to each other with a gorgeous strip of green lawn out front (the kids cricket pitch during our stay) overlooking the beach. The view for the next 6 days was going to be a little rough to take- SPECTACULAR-AMAZING-PICTURESQUE! Just a few descriptive words that came to mind.

Togs, Kaftans and flip flops on. Off we all ventured for a spot of lunch. On the buggies we went heading down to the Marina in search of our first Hamilton Island meal. The Marina Tavern was a fitting choice. All little tummies were running on empty. The Marina Tavern was the perfect pick overlooking Hamilton Island Marina and the generous pub style meals satisfied every ones appetites.

Time for a little R & R, the Bougainvillea pool sounded like the ideal choice. A short buggy ride away and we were all in the water. The Bougainvillea pool is located just behind Catseye Beach and we found it to be our favourite spot to relax, with its lush tropical lagoon landscape it was a serene oasis. With an afternoon CHI Chi in hand this was to be our afternoon ritual in the coming days ahead.

Our stay on Hamilton Island proved to be the most ideal short stay family getaway.

With each day having a perfect balance of activities to be enjoyed by everyone as well as adequate rest and relaxation. The dining options were a perfect blend too. Having chosen to stay in fully serviced apartments this was great as we could make delicious meals and enjoy the spectacular view from the balcony while sipping on a cuppa in the morning and enjoying the very social wildlife, and relax of an afternoon with icy cold beverages on hand, while the kids enjoyed a game of cricket on the lush green strip of lawn. Superb!

A dear friend whom has been visiting Hamilton Island for the last few years with her family highly recommend that we go to a restaurant called ‘COCA CHU’ (let me tell you I take her food and restaurant recommendations seriously. She is the most amazing cook and a true foodie!) I was so intrigued, so I made the reservation well in advance of our arrival to the island. I also booked in a baby sitter (also recommended by my gorgeous friend) the baby sitter was fantastic with the kids, she works at the kids club (clownfish club) during the day.

Before our dinner we enjoyed pre dinner drinks at ONE TREE HILL, Hamilton Islands Hilltop lookout. Cocktails on sunset a perfect way to begin the evening, enjoying the most spectacular sunset over the Whitsunday Islands, just stunning.

Dinner at COCA CHU, WOW! My girlfriend forgot to mention to me that wearing elastic waisted pants, is a requirement! The food was divine. So divine in fact, that we kept ordering dish upon dish. And for those who know me well, I have a little obsession with deserts. And desert certainly exceeded my expectations as well. One very satisfied diner!

COCA CHU s hawker-style street food of South East Asia is designed to be share-able. And share we did, I lost track of how many dishes we did share. Each dish presented like a piece of art. Truly beautiful.

One thing that we really loved about Hamilton Island, is that you could do as much as you wished or as little. There are so many activities to choose from that there is an activity that will suit all the family members from little ones to Nanny and Poppy.

One afternoon we hired kayaks from the Island Beach Sports and enjoyed kayaking on Catseye beach. (It also proved how unfit I was, great fun though).

The boys had teed up a game of golf at the Hamilton Island Golf Club on Dent Island (a very short boat trip from Hamilton Island) but unfortunately our friends luggage turned up in Brisbane and not Hamilton Island. OOPS! Never mind. A game of golf is HIGHLIGHTED on our TO DO LIST upon our return in 2017. So we made do with a game of Mini golf with all the kids which was super cool.

One evening after dinner we ventured down to the main pool for the kids to enjoy the kids fun zone (this is usually set up by the Bougainvillea Pool of an afternoon) jumping castle, face painting and arts and crafts. This particular evening appeared to be a little busy at the kids fun zone, so we all headed down to the bowling alley. The bowling alley transforms to a glow in the dark bowling alley. With music pumping we all found our disco fever moves as we played a game or two of bowling.

All of our kids were keen to attend one of the art classes that were on offer at the art gallery on the island. While the kids were left to find their inner creativity, we took the opportunity to enjoy some quiet time and enjoyed a little pampering at the SPA WUMURDAYLIN, a much deserved treat in preparation for our Island departure back to the smoke (Sydney).

Our visit to Hamilton Island was short but sweet. We look forward to our next visit to this tranquil piece of Australian paradise. As we have so much more to discover or so little if we desire. We may just to choose to embrace some quality rest and relaxation time with our family.
